interstate romance

My face Dan ShefflerAs many of you know, most of the readers of this blog have had a pretty rough couple of days with recent events. I thought I would use my post today to lighten the air a little bit by posting a humorous poem I wrote about 6 months ago. I will return to my normal content tomorrow. All of the events in the poem actually happened… except the falling in love part. I was in the car with some friends on a trip to Chicago over Christmas break. We got stuck in traffic and kept passing this car full of girls, who were presumably sisters. I was bored and this poem is the result of my antics.

Interstate Romance

Perhaps the bumper fish,

is an indication of the character within.

Passing by, I catch her eye,

and flash my bible to the window

to demonstrate my hope of commonality.

Again another pass-

bare foot extended

drops flung from the windshield

by the speeding-ahead wind

sting the toes.

A smile,

an awkward glance,

and finally a distant chuckle,

is all I receive in return.

119 miles farther down interstate 65

with Chicago still ahead.

The best I can accomplish

to confess my love

is a fog drawn heart

framing my nervous grin.

exit 84–

a momentary waved farewell–

The last I’ll see of her

is not her face but her tail-lights

Haha! Keren, remember the unforgettable experience of being in the backseat with Dan during his fleeting romance?
