Notes on Faith

scribeI have just completed a word study on faith by going through the old testament and studying every time the root word (awman) for believe is used. In doing this study God has shown me that the understanding of faith that I had at the beginning was quite askew. I have found that faith in the old testament is not contrasted to reason because faith is our reasonable response to a loving Father. Further, I have found that we inherit in a way the stability of what we put our faith in. Said another way, a house built on the rock will stand because the rock stands. Read on to see how I arrived at these conclusions

Notes on ἀπόστελος

The term ἀπόστελος seems to have an interesting range of meanings.  As best I can tell, it can be broken up into three senses:

  1. The classical sense of “expedition” or ambassador.
  2. The koine sense of messenger or ambassador.
  3. The Christian sense of the spiritual office of an Apostle.

Gutenberg Bible Exhibit

Gutenberg Bible ExhibitI found this very cool exhibit from the University of Texas via the I Love Typography blog.  Apparently, the University of Texas purchased a Gutenberg bible for $2.8 million back in 1978 and they have now scanned nearly every page and made them available in a nifty browser for your perusal.  During my trip to New York this summer, I had the pleasure of seeing one of these at the New York Public Library.

My Scriptures

The following is a list of scriptures that God has used to directly speak to me about who I am and why I am here.

Nehemiah 8:7-8
the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.

Proverbs 20:15
There is gold and abundance of costly stones,
but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Isaiah 50:4
The Lord God has given me
the tongue of those who are taught,
that I may know how to sustain with a word
him who is weary.
Morning by morning he awakens;
he awakens my ear
to hear as those who are taught.

Jeremiah 15:19
Therefore thus says the Lord:
“If you return, I will restore you,
and you shall stand before me.
If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,
you shall be as my mouth.
They shall turn to you,
but you shall not turn to them.

Jeremiah 3:15
And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.

Matthew 13:52
Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.

1 Peter 4:10-11
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God

Posting Again

scribeFor the past couple years this blog has fallen toward the bottom of my list of things to worry about.  Entering grad school and getting married have meant that I no longer have the time to write the same type of blog posts with anything resembling regularity.

However, I would like to see this site remain active and useful.  Therefore, rather than devoting the necessary time to writing posts exclusively for this website, I will simply use this as a place to post content that I have already invested the time to create.  For instance, I already spend a good deal of time studying scripture or thinking about philosophy.  I might as well post my notes, comments and meditations here.

Therefore, the shape of this blog will shift to a more personal and less edited form.  It will primarily serve as a searchable repository for my own notes.  If these notes are of use or interest to anyone else, well and good.  If you would like to comment on them, wonderful.  If you find them inane and incoherent, pass them by.
