who am I

I am Dan Sheffler.I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, which means that I trust him without qualification to make me like himself; a loaded statement I know.  I am married to the ever-beautiful Rose.  I am a TA in classical languages (ie Greek and Latin) at the University of Kentucky.  At one time, this site existed as a place for me to post short essays and thoughts on a variety of topics intoned to be read and discussed.  These posts can be found in the archives.  Now, this site exists primarily as a repository for my own notes, open to the perusal of others.

The reason that I chose the name ex-icarus for this site is because at one time in my life I was very much like the mythical boy Icarus, but I have chosen to abandon that way of life. Icarus was full of pride and put more faith in his fake wings than in his father who made them. He flew too high on his own strength, too close to the sun for his own good and ultimately fell to his death. In a similar way, as a younger man I put my trust in the gifts that my Father had given me instead of trusting him. I tried to accomplish in the flesh what could only be done by his Spirit. He had to bring me to a place of brokenness in the cross before I was able to leave that way of life.

    Dan,

I want to commend you on your blog and add my endorsement. So many cyberspace Christians spout off high minded
dribble without any accountability to live what they post.

I would like to go on record affirming that you have been faithful to the ideas you discuss on the site, that you are specifically accountable to both a team of peers and the leadership of the church and that you judge yourself most rigorously and offer encouragement for growth to others in the spirit of love.

Finally, I am going to ask that you post this in a conspicuous place as a testimony to the Biblical truths we hold dear (I know you would be hesitant to display an endorsement that seemed self serving).

    Thanks for your work,
